Catch basins catch surface water and carry it away through the piping underground and disperse it in a safe location. Catch basins are typically 9" or 12" boxes or 6" round basins. The catch basins have a sump that captures dirt and debris that gets into the catch basin which helps to minimize clogging of the system. These basins will need to periodically cleaned. Drain holes should also be drilled into the bottom so that any water left in the bottom of the basins can drain into the soil.

Channel drains are commonly used in or along edges of concrete patios, pool decks, sidewalks, and driveways.

Downspout connections are a great way to reduce the amount of rain water that collects around your property. The downspouts are connected to the drainage system channeling water through the underground piping and dispersing the water in a safe place away from your house. The force of the water coming from the downspout also helps to move water through the drainage system piping and catch basins at a faster rate allowing more water to be captured.

Piping used for drainage systems is typically 4" pvc pipe. Black 4" corrugated piping is also used but generally 4" pvc pipe is recommended because of the smooth surface inside the pipe allowing debris to flow down stream whereas the corrugated pipe will usually catch debris and eventually clog the pipe and impede flow. Also fittings like elbows and tees should have smooth curves where possible to allow smoother and faster water flow through the system.

Perforated 4" pvc pipe is used in some systems to capture water in the soil that backs up to the ground surface when the soil is saturated and cannot absorb any more water. Also the water in the pipe can be absorbed back into the soil through the holes in the pipe helping to drain any residual water in the system.

Pop up emitters are used to disperse the water from the drainage system in a safe location. The force of the water flowing through the drainage system pushes up on a cap allowing water to disperse. When water flow slows enough the cap closes off the pipe preventing debris and critters from entering the drainage system piping.
